A department essential to the provision of safe surgical services at Phillip Island Community Hospital is now being tested, ready to support day surgery services when these begin early next year.
The Central Sterile Services (CSS) team cleans and sterilises surgical equipment before and after surgery, using state-of-the-art specialised instrument washers and high temperature sterilisers.
To support the operation of the CSS, Bass Coast Health (BCH) has appointed Shannon Dollery as CSS Manager. She will oversee all CSS operations across BCH, including at Wonthaggi Hospital.
Shannon brings a strong foundation in sterile services, having spent the past three years as an Instrument Technician at BCH.
Her career also includes experience in Environmental Management and Plant Microbiology, providing her with a unique understanding of safety systems, quality processes and the science that underpins effective sterilisation practices.
In her new role, Shannon will focus on improving systems and driving continuous improvement to enhance patient safety and service efficiency.
“We are very excited about getting this space up and running as we will be able to support reprocessing of equipment used for podiatry and other outpatient clinics, as well as the dental clinics when they begin,” Shannon said.
“I’m honoured to lead the CSS team at such a pivotal moment. My goal is to foster an environment where best practice, innovation and collaboration guide everything we do.
“Together, we will strive not only to meet the evolving needs of our community, but to set a higher standard for what is possible in our field. BCH’s commitment to excellence and its forward-thinking approach positions us to achieve meaningful advancements in the years ahead.
“I look forward to working closely with the skilled and experienced Perioperative, Infection Prevention, and broader clinical teams to maintain high standards of practice and care.”
