Cancer nurses care with compassion at Bass Coast Health

Bass Coast Health (BCH) is marking Cancer Nurses Day on 14 August by recognising the incredible work of its dedicated oncology nurses - the heart and soul of cancer care at the L. Rigby Cancer Centre at Wonthaggi Hospital.

Providing chemotherapy, immunotherapy and specialist consultations, the Centre supports patients from across Bass Coast and South Gippsland, allowing them to receive world-class care close to home.

BCH Interim CEO Simone Alexander said the day is a chance to publicly thank the nurses who provide not just expert clinical support, but also deep compassion and emotional strength to patients.

“The patience, empathy and care our Cancer Nurses have for our patients is admirable. They are by their sides during physical and mentally challenging times, and guide them through what is often an arduous journey,” she said.

Registered Nurse Linda Tack said, “It’s great for Bass Coast residents to have access to cancer treatment locally and not have to commute to Melbourne for it.

“I’m full-time here at BCH and love my job. I’ve been here for two-and-a-half years and have just finished a post-graduate qualification in Oncology and Haematology."

For patient Heather Harry, who has been receiving treatment at Wonthaggi Hospital since last year, the nursing care she receives makes all the difference.

“They’re a wonderful team of nurses. They’re so cheerful and happy to do anything to make you comfortable,” she said.

Nurse Tarra Funnell added she is in her graduate year and loves working for BCH.

“It’s been an amazing opportunity helping people to feel better - physically and emotionally,” she said.
