Paediatric Emergency Medicine Fellow supports Bass Coast families

Bass Coast Health is proud to welcome the arrival of an Emergency Consultant undertaking specialist training in paediatrics.

Dr Gargi Kanabar is a Fellow of the Australasian College of Emergency Medicine (FACEM) and also a Paediatric Emergency Medicine trainee.

She will be working in the Emergency Department at Wonthaggi Hospital on a casual basis and comes to our team with a high level of paediatric training and experience from Monash Children’s Hospital, where she works regularly.

“I’ll be able to offer extra experience and training in paediatrics,” Dr Kanabar said.

“Paediatrics is very a different branch of medicine to treating adults because children have different conditions and different needs, so having that extra knowledge is beneficial.”

Bass Coast mother Kiani Milkins appreciated Dr Kanabar’s assistance when she brought her baby son Cameron to the Emergency Department recently.

“Dr Kanabar was quick and straight to the point. Having her here is a great service for young families in our area,” she said.

Originally from Glasgow in Scotland, Dr Kanabar came to Australia in 2012 and worked in Hobart, Alice Springs and Adelaide before coming to Melbourne in 2019 to complete her emergency training.

Her strong interest in paediatrics led her to pursue paediatric emergency training.

“I have really enjoyed working regionally and especially the challenges of emergency departments and I feel strongly that good paediatric care is provided in regional areas,” she said.

“I think it is especially important to be able to treat sick kids locally so they don’t have to be transferred to other hospitals and be away from their families.”
