Physiotherapists assist people to regain, maintain or improve movements and skills to enable them to function as independently as possible. Physiotherapists use a range of manual skills, exercise prescription and education strategies in their treatments.

Services

Inpatient

Physiotherapy staff provide assessment and treatment for inpatients at Bass Coast Health. This includes acute inpatients and those undergoing short-term rehabilitation for conditions such as stroke, fractures or following surgery and slow stream rehabilitation or Geriatric Evaluation Management (GEM).

Outpatients

Provision of generalist clinical physiotherapy assessment and treatment, and advice with respect to gait aids, treatment for musculoskeletal complaints including, but not limited to arthritis and lower back pain. We provide rehabilitation following joint replacement or stroke, health promotion, exercise programs and home-based physiotherapy.

We also provide specialist physiotherapy services such as Lymphoedema clinic, Continence clinic for men and women and Falls clinic.

Outpatient services are provided in the form of a short-term intervention to assist patients with acute symptoms. Patients then progress to self-management and are discharged from the service.

Residential Care

Residents of Bass Coast Health Residential Care facilities are assessed by a Physiotherapist on admission and reviewed by Physiotherapy staff as required.

Physiotherapy staff are also involved in the delivery of programs including:

  • Cardiac Rehabilitation
  • Pulmonary Rehabilitation
  • Falls Prevention
  • Joint Replacement Group

Admission Criteria

Referral to Physiotherapy can be made by your doctor, consultants or other service providers. Wonthaggi Physiotherapy Department also accepts self–referral. Please call for more details as an appointment is necessary.  

Availability

Physiotherapists are located in the Community Rehabilitation Centre at Wonthaggi Hospital and Cowes. Physiotherapy services are available across Bass Coast Health in both acute and rehabilitation.
